Don’t let the colder weather months discourage you from getting out there and caching! There are some benefits to caching in the snow and colder temperatures and with some extra precautions it can be just as enjoyable as caching in the summer months!
These are some of the benefits of caching in the winter:

• There are no mosquitoes or other biting insects!
• Leaves have fallen off of trees and bushes providing an easier view of the caches that may be hidden there.
• There are fewer muggles. Not everyone enjoys being outside in the winter.
• And there may be fewer geocachers out searching for the FTF!
• You now can slide down those hills, if there is lots of snow!
• There are footprints that will lead you right to the cache. The multi caches become much easier and faster to do!
• Keeping yourself busy geocaching in the winter makes the warmer months come faster!
• Frozen creeks and swamps make access to that island cache potentially easier.

And the special precautions you should take while caching in the winter:
• Dress in layers. If you get too warm it is easy to then remove a layer.
• Bring extra boots/shoes and socks just in case your feet get wet.
• Ensure that you are carrying the appropriate first aid supplies and necessities if you are going for a longer walk or hike.
• Make sure that the frozen creek or swamp is frozen thick enough to walk on and all the way across before you set out to get to that island cache.

Do you like to cache in the winter? Or do you have any other benefits to provide? Or how about other precautions?

These are the main reasons I prefer to cache in the winter/colder months. And for fat out of shape guys like myself if makes the hike even more of a fat burner. In the colder months, after that long hike it's much easier too cool off in the winter.... and I hate mosquitoes!!

Winter has never kept me from going geocaching. In fact, if I remember properly my third anniversary of geocaching will be coming up in a couple of days. To go along with that thought, some of my earliest geocache finds were in that first month of January when I got started and were in winter driving conditions when many people were hiding inside. Just something nice to be out and about on the geocaching trail, especially in a woods on a winter day enjoying nature when time permits.

My personal suggestions and recommendations: Good, thick waterproof boots, gloves and snow pants. The gloves come in handy for digging in the snow for that container!
